Podcasting 101
Speak Up: Your voice is perfect for the radio. Join us for a week of radio magic as we create and launch a podcast step-by-step. Learn to write scripts, record audio, and produce broadcast and web-worthy content. By the end of the week, the project class team will write, record and edit their own podcast. You'll learn how to prepare your podcast for online and on-air distribution and create visual photo journals that can complement the production.
/Through the artistic mediums of knitting, sewing and embroidery, students will unit local borders by stitching together t-shirts and color fabrics that represent their identities and the institutions we are trying to navigate as immigrants and as women.
Deejaying as Decolonial Strategy: The Pedagogy of Hip Hop; Music, Media and Technology
Students will participate in learning deejay skills and the class will culminate in a mixtape produced by the youth. We will examine the ways in which colonialism/white supremacy/capitalism/patriarchy and other forms of oppression impact our world and histories. This course is taught through a Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy and focuses on having young people become critical media consumers and producers which allows the space for self-representation and actualization.
Danza and Baile Folklorico
Movement is life. There is no better way to center the mind, body and soul than through movement. We will take this ancient art form to a new level by also connecting to history and integrating different styles of dance to create a piece that is uniquely our own in the borderland of Kentucky. We will start by learning about the baile folklorico history from Mexico and folklorico origins from each state and then move on to popular Latin and US dance trends. Through song and creativity we will create moves with the goal of learning a complete dance by weeks end that uplift the experience of immigrant women in KY.
De colores: Community Mural and Artevismo
This class will take participants on a journey of mayan/aztec history, art and practices with the focus on uplifting the female spirit. The class will bring Nepantla to life by creating a mural that challenges the traditional role of women along with the silencing of immigrant youth in the US today through family separation at the border and through mass incarceration across the United States. Students will also design and create a print for posters/t-shirts embracing Nepantla and showing their strength as multilingual, multicultural community leaders.
Theatre and Movement
In this class, we will be going over a few elements of theatre including performance, voice action, and body movement on stage. Students will get to write and perform their own pieces, play theatre games, and create unique characters to perform as, either from their imagination or with a little aid. The focus of the class will be on teaching students how to be comfortable and confident in their creations and performing "out of body".
